Supply Chain Technology Tip of the Day

Choosing an EDI vendor - especially one that integrates its EDI solution with your ERP system - is not simply a matter of choosing a commodity product on the basis of initial cost and perhaps feature sets, in order to meet a retailer's EDI mandate.Haitham Ghadiry

A Move Toward Paperless Shipping with EDI

Shipping systems are a vital connection in any company's fulfillment process. With the increased popularity of shipping direct to customers and the ongoing focus of minimizing input errors and the amount of paperwork generated, it makes business sense to integrate a shipping module to your EDI software package.

EDI, which stands for Electronic Data Interchange, enables a computer system from one company to “talk” to the computer system of another company and digitally exchange data. Because this digital exchange of data is facilitated using computers, most, if not all of the associated business processes can be automated so they occur with little or no manual data entry. This enables companies to electronically exchange business documents like purchase orders and invoices.

The shipping module in the HighJump TrueCommerce EDI Platform creates a seamless connection between shipping systems, such as UPS and FedEx, and your EDI transactional information resulting in enhanced customer service with an ability to provide up-to-the-minute details.

You will be able to preload order distribution details into your shipping systems with available information including order number, ship-to information, and even packing details with weights. With the addition of a simple bar code scan, this physical process becomes an automated, one-step event.

Thank you for your questions.

1 – Our solution is offered in both a Saas (Web based) or on-premise option. Transactions take just seconds to and from Trading Partners. In other words, if the trading partner sends a Purchase Order at 1:00:00 pm, the customer can expect to receive this document within our translator product seconds following the trading partners send action (i.e. 1:00:10 pm). Our translator solution is built using .Net technologies, with the browser components leverage Silverlight technologies.
2 – Our web application leverages HTTPS (secured and data encrypted connection) plus web service authentication along with user authorization for each transmission. In other words, all data transferred between customer and our network/trading partner is secured and encrypted over a SSL connection. In addition to that, we have application logic to ensure the call is coming from a purchased translator as well as an authorized customer (Authorization and Authentication).
