Grocery Shopping“Supermarket Guru”, Phil Lampert recently released his top ten predictions for the food and beverage industry for 2012.  Here are a few points from his article directly related to those of us in supply chain management. Read all 10 predictions at the link below.

More and more consumers are integrating technology into their shopping habits with the use of QR codes, cell phone cameras, comparing prices at nearby retailers, self-checkouts, in-store interactive media devices and mobile coupons. Savvy consumers want information at their fingertips to make purchasing decisions.  Look at the upcoming Google Wallet and other mobile apps that will allow shoppers to find out nutritional, allergy and country of origin information on individual products, and also allow them to receive special offers, electronic coupons and the option to checkout themselves.

Lampert points out the opportunity this presents for retailers and food manufacturers to add personalization with suggested purchases and targeted offers based on consumers’ histories with their products and stores.  Providing the add-on information to the consumer in a friendly and functional way feels like a warm and fuzzy, value-add that drives brand loyalty.

2012 will also bring an increased focus on where our food is coming from. In the age of food traceability and the recent Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) legislation, shoppers want to know more about the journey their food has traveled from the farm to their plates. Read about how supply chain management software can help you comply with the FSMA legislation: download whitepaper
